CURRENT MEASURABLE GOALS

  1. Promote professional practices for effective paraeducators l supervision, training and utilization.
  2. Produce policy briefs and position papers to promote best practices for appropriate use of the paraeducators
  3. Conduct research on issues related to paraeducators

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

  1. Survey administered to TED members (primarily teacher educators) to learn about how teacher education programs are preparing teachers to work with paraeducators - manuscript accepted for publication and wll guide teacher preparation programs in paying attention the important issue of paraeducator supervision by teachers
  2. Published the TED brief on the TED website - Download PDF
  3. Advocacy with the standards workgroup to ensure that the language in the new teacher preparation standards highlights the teachers role in directing and coaching paraeducators
  4. Working on a publication on importance of building paraeducator- to-teacher programs
  5. Mentoring doctoral students who are interested in paraeducator issues and encouraging them to pursue research in topic related to paraeducator utilization and training

 

ACTION ITEMS

  1. Increase membership through activities defined by SIG Membership Co-chairs (i.e. create Facebook page; contact CEC presenters; contact CEC divisions
  2. More frequent SIG meetings to create opportunities to learn about each other’s work and make connections
  3. Position paper/Survey on paraeducator supervision with CASE.
  4. Consider interveners (paraprofessionals who work with student with deafblindness) in all conversations focused on paraprofessionals
  5. Updating Newsletter content –Discuss ideas e.g. paraprofessional related policy update, featuring a paraeducators or scholar,

  1. Guidelines and policies for training, supervision and utilization for paraeducators serving individuals with exceptional needs
  2. Guidelines and polices for teacher education programs to prepare teachers who are able to address issues related to paraeducator training and utilization and effectively direct and support the work of paraeducators.

CURRENT MEASURABLE GOALS
By 2021, maintain formal and informal communication with membership with at least 10 communications from across all sources.
By 2021, proposed a change to the SSEPC Board structure to include a Professional Development chair.
By 2021, maintain or increase collaboration with other SIGS, Caucuses.
By 2021, increase SSEPC at both TED and CEC through presentations, involvement in the TED Board, and flags on name badges.

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
In 2019, more than 10 communications were provided to members including two newsletters, 5 reminder messages via the Communications person, and various social media communications
In 2019, it was decided by the Board and membership to use the previously used stipend for the Chair to go toward the Nasim Dil Award as long as TED was reimbursing the Chair for conference and TED Board attendance.
In 2019, an electronic voting system was developed, but was not needed .
In 2019, the Early Childhood SIG and SSEPC hosted a joint writing retreat at TED.
In 2019, SSEPC collaborated to provide SSEPC Symposium, SSEPC Shares!, SSEPC Roundtables, and SSEPC/EC Writing Retreat
In 2019, SSEPC held the Nasim Dil Award reception and honored a nominated recipient

 

ACTION ITEMS
The Chair will hold monthly Presidential Line meetings via Zoom in order to increase communication with the Board and check in on goal progress
The Communications Chair will develop a communications table so each Executive Board member will be able to sign up for a time to communicate with members via social media
The Associate Chair will work with the Board on Constitutional changes if needed due to changes of the Board structure to include a Professional Development Chair
The Symposium Chair will work with the Ad Hoc Outreach person (these roles will change with Board restructure) to plan for PD at TED 2020
The Membership Chair will work collaboratively with the Board to recruit new, diverse membership
The Symposium Chair will work with members on a Symposium focused on diversity

 

OUTCOMES
At TED 2019, the Nasim Dil Award was presented to Amy Stevens and a reception was held in her honor
At CEC 2020, it was reported SSEPC membership is up 12 from two years ago and 4 from one year ago.
At TED 2019, the Silent Auction was held and there was an increase in total funds earnedfrom prior year.
At TED 2019, SSEPC hosted Symposium, SSEPC Shares!, SSEPC Roundtables, and SSEPC/EC Writing Retreat
At TED 2019, SSEPC elections were held and all board positions are currently filled with members who have been actively involved in SSEPC

This collaboration has planned products and publications
Will collaborate on HLP sessions for TED 2020, and are active in the TAG

Award Early Career Publication Award.
Increase member capacity to conduct high quality research that addresses issues of teacher and student sociocultural identities and equity, in relation to the SET workforce (recruitment, preparation, support, retention), including expand methodological and conceptual approaches by drawing on expertise from communities outside of TED for presenting at TED 2020 (e.g., education policy, urban ed, critical educational studies).
Increase number of mentors and mentees of color to participate in the Research Roundtable event.
Collaborate with other committees to design valuable, high interest sessions at TED 2020 and CEC 2021.

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Successful, well-attended sessions at TED 2019 and CEC 2020
Fruitful discussion at CEC 2020 identifying committee priorities and purpose, as well as critical role the committee may have on advocating for diverse voices and methods

ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Had over 25 doctoral student present in the Kaleidoscope session at CEC
Had 4 successful roundtable discussions running simultaneously
An estimated 50 individuals participated in some form during the KScope session (whether as reviewers, presenters, panelists, or attendees)

Develop a call for participation on the Doc Talk blog
Develop and publish the Doc Talk blog on the website
